Celebrating 40 Years of Service: Our History As HVAC and IAQ Professionals
What began as a leap of faith in 1985 has grown into four decades of trusted service, innovation, and commitment to homeowners throughout New York.
After leaving his job in October 1985 to start his own business, Anthony Marmo began working as a self-employed heating contractor. As the business gained momentum, he realized his vision was becoming a reality. On September 23, 1986, Clover Heating Incorporated was officially registered in the State of New York.
What’s in a Name …?
One of the questions Anthony is asked most often is, “Why Clover?”
The answer goes back to the company’s earliest days. Anthony’s Irish wife at the time, and mother of their son Liam, suggested the name Clover, saying, “If you name it Clover, it might bring you luck.” The name felt right, and it stuck.
From Heating Specialization to Whole Home Performance
At just 23 years old, Anthony believed that by focusing exclusively on heating systems, he could work hard during the winter months and earn enough to avoid spending summers in hot attics installing retrofit air conditioning systems. As he likes to joke today, “That didn’t exactly work out!”
The reality was that homeowners needed year-round comfort solutions, which eventually led to the registration of a DBA and the evolution of the company into Clover Heating & Cooling.
Evolving Expertise for Energy Efficiency
Years later, following the events of September 11, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) selected Anthony and Clover to participate in a pioneering pilot program focused on building performance and energy efficiency. Anthony was chosen because of his extensive expertise in combustion systems, carbon monoxide diagnostics, and corrective measures. At the time, he was among fewer than 1,500 professionals nationwide certified by the National Comfort Institute (NCI).
The initiative, which later became known as Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®️, helped educate contractors on improving the energy efficiency, comfort, and safety of homes throughout New York. The process began with comprehensive home assessments, commonly known as energy audits, during which homes were thoroughly inspected and tested to identify opportunities for improvement.
Improving Home Comfort and HVAC Peformance
As part of the ENERGY STAR program, Anthony earned accreditation through the Building Performance Institute (BPI), and Clover became the first for-profit BPI-accredited company in the downstate New York region. Prior to that, the program had primarily been delivered through nonprofit organizations focused on improving energy efficiency in low-income housing.
Long-Term Solutions for Customer Comfort and Energy Savings
The driving philosophy behind the program was simple: “Seal Tight and Ventilate Right.” This approach aligned perfectly with Clover’s growing emphasis on health, safety, comfort, and building science. The company became known for not only improving energy efficiency but also for ensuring that every improvement was verified to prevent adverse conditions that could impact the families they served.
Reflecting this expanded mission, the company later rebranded as Clover Comfort, The Green Home Pros. During the COVID-19 era, the company returned to its roots as Clover Heating & Cooling, while proudly retaining the tagline “The Green Home Pros.”
