Cutting Home Heating Bills
Winter is the time when home heating
bills soar. But this issue should not be much of a burden on
homeowners if they know how to find ways to cut the cost of their
heating bill. Sure, there are simple ways you can save on energy
consumption at home. The key is to make all family members adhere to
the house rules.
The U.S. Department of Energy says humidity is a major factor in
increasing a home’s heat consumption. The solution, therefore, is a
humidifier which can improve the heat index. It’s also good for the
skin as it won’t cause dryness.
Keeping your thermostat down is a proven method. You can get a
programmable or computerized thermostat which will surely reduce
your heat overnight and even during daytime. By installing this
type, you can program the thermostat to lower the heat of your home
when all of you are out during the day or when you’re asleep.
The windows are a vital source of natural daylight and solar energy
so open your drapes and blinds during the day and let nature’s
warmth come into your home. Keep in mind that clean window glass is
helpful in absorbing the sun’s heat.
Be sure to clean your furnace regularly to make it more energy
efficient. If you’re using a forced-air system, change your filter
as well once every month. Your hot-water radiators have to be bled
once or twice every season and remove sediments from your steam
radiators twice a year. The registers should also be cleaned.
Maintenance of the system is always essential so it’s best that you
get a specialist to check your furnace to ensure that’s performing
well.
Did you know that you can use your ceiling fans during winter? Yes,
you can because when it’s set on reverse, it can actually take in
warm air throughout your home. We’ve been taught in the elementary
grades that heat rises up so if your home has high ceilings, using a
ceiling fan will keep the warm air down in the room. So you see,
ceiling fans are very useful for heating and cooling purposes.
Use your electrical home appliances from lights, washing machine,
dishwasher to televisions and stereo systems wisely. In other words,
turn it off when not in use to save on energy.
If there are leaks in your home including drafts, seal them as soon
as you find out. Doors and windows are said to be major sources of a
home’s energy drain. You can use rope caulk or weather strips in
sealing doors, windows cracks and holes. If you find some damaged
interior seals, replace them right away. Using insulated curtains
can also help prevent drafts from around the windows.
Shut off the doors of rooms in your home that are not being used.
This way, warm air will circulate only in the frequently used rooms.
If cold air escapes to other rooms, it will increase the work load
of your furnace and your heating costs as well.
Following these tips will lower your heating bills in one way or
another. If you have kids at home, teach them these steps so that
everybody will be happy and warm during winter. |
